MARIA VILLAX, is both Head of Family Governance and Solutions at Bedrock
Group, the global investment and advisory firm, and part of a business owning
family.
Here she considers the links between legacy and purpose, and the question of
who is responsible for determining legacy.
“
In my family’s case, legacy and purpose are quite
clear: it’s health, we save lives. When you have one
business and its purpose is defined, it’s easy to
drive it forward and be clear from generation to
generation. When the family starts to diversify or
there is a liquidity event, then purpose becomes
much more about how to preserve the family
identity, values and ways of being in business
together.
When I see families beginning to diversify, they
really struggle to define what they want their
legacy to be. Is our legacy our family? Do we
want to educate our next generation to be the
best possible owners - because that is a legacy
in itself? Or are we as family going to create a
legacy of giving back to society?
