LESSONS IN LEGACY
“
Legacy is not as loaded and can be a way to
broach the topic. The question ‘what is your legacy’
moves the conversation on to how you prepare
the company to continue – the focus is then on
governance preparation, strategic planning, having
an estate, wealth and assets plan, and an individual
development plan.
Some people could construe legacy as an egotistical
topic. But, if approached properly and given the
time and value it needs, the question ‘what is your
legacy’ may be as simple as starting a governance
conversation or bringing external directors onto the
board.
It’s about process, not products or building wealth.
It’s about having a mindset that you are a steward or a
custodian and that you are moving the conversation
from ‘me’ to ‘us’. Great leaders have the prescience to
put in processes before they are needed. They have
the perspicacity, the audacity to bring others into
the board room who are not family members. This
shows insight beyond their years, as they know that
the next generation will be challenged – whether by
technology or personality.
